Training Impacts All Areas of Loss
Many of the "training programs" completed today, are given, verbally, often in conjunction with an "open book" exam relying on the experience of the"training staff ".
Are "open book" exams really an effective way to train? "Open book" exams, do have their place among professional educators, "only" if they challenge a persons creative and problem solving abilities.
"Open book" exams in which the trainee simply copies the answer from one place to another, are inadequate, at improving a persons knowledge or instilling a renewed awareness on any subject.
Flipping through page after page and copying answers from one spot to another for 500 questions or more, is not even an exercise for your memory. It is only an exercise in copying.
Other training methods in use, are the discussions held by the trainer. Training is given in various subject areas and a "check mark" or a trainee's signature is placed beside each item.
With this method, it is difficult to to know specifically what "hazards" were covered. Most of us who have been around for a while, know that, more often that not, ground based training has taken short-cuts and was rushed through, understandably, as a manager experiences operational pressures.
An often heard phrase within the general aviation community is, "the same accidents are happening over and over again.
Every year in Canada an average of "fifty", TSB reported, helicopter accidents occur. How many unreported accidents are their?
